CPM Explained: How Livestream Ad Pricing Works
By Florian Weber · Chief Technology Officer
CPM is the currency digital advertising trades in, and no one planning livestream campaigns gets around it. The abbreviation stands for cost per mille: the price of 1,000 impressions. The formula is trivial. The interesting part is the question of what an impression actually is, because that is where two CPM offers stop being comparable.
The basic math
Three quantities, one formula: cost, impressions, CPM.
- CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
- Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000
- Budget = impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM
An example: a 2,000-euro budget at a 20-euro CPM buys 100,000 impressions. Drop the CPM to 10 euros and reach doubles at the same budget. So far, arithmetic any media planner does in their sleep.
The real question: what counts as an impression?
Two vendors, both quoting a 15-euro CPM. With the first, an impression counts as soon as an ad server logs the delivery, whether or not a human saw it. With the second, it counts only when the stream was verifiably live and had viewers. On paper both cost the same. In reality they can differ by multiples.
Livestream advertising adds its own checklist:
- Live verification: Is delivery checked against the stream's real live data, confirming the channel was actually broadcasting at that moment?
- Viewer basis: Are impressions based on measured concurrent viewers, or on estimates and follower counts?
- Visibility: Does the ad run inside the stream image itself, where every viewer sees it, or in slots that ad blockers and page layouts swallow?
For in-stream ads the third question is solved structurally, because the overlay is part of the video image. Our in-stream ads explainer shows how the format works, and What does Twitch advertising cost? breaks down the billing logic behind it.
CPM is a price tag, not a verdict
A low CPM is not automatically a bargain, and a high one is not automatically a rip-off. Niche audiences with high purchasing power justify higher rates; untargeted mass reach is cheap and scattershot to match. Meaningful comparison only works within the same impression definition and with the audience behind it in view.
Hence our advice: get every vendor's impression definition in writing, then normalize offers to verified contacts. Our current CPM rates are published openly on the advertiser page, next to the live available reach — so you can run exactly that calculation without sitting through a sales call.
